So everybody, I’ve put this podcast together to help you guys with websites and if you’re looking to build websites. I’m letting you know how to build them and market them. How to do SEO and Google Ads, all the things that we ask questions about day to day, I’m going to walk you guys through several blog posts that will go into detail on each of these key subjects.

I will also give you information to build your business online while using software and automating your processes.

The first post is very basic. Let’s go through the background of a website.

If you’re new to it and have no experience whatever, let’s quickly talk about what a website is.

A website is a place for people to come to to learn about your product or service. It can be a myriad of other things. We won’t go into that here though as that’s not the purpose of this blog.

Now websites are made of two components, a domain name and hosting. The domain name is the name space in which people can type and find your website.
I like to put it as an address for a house.
The domain is an address for the house, whereas the hosting is the house.

If you don’t have an address for the house and someone wants to come visit, they won’t be able to find you.

I hope my analogy makes sense.

The next question people ask alot is they want to know the best way of building a website.

There’s a few ways and I like to define it on the type of computer user you are. If you’re a absolute technophone, or if you have some experience and want to try something yourself.

You probably know the different options out there. You can use sites like Wix and Weebly, Squarespace to put websites together.

While they are a good way to start with setting up a site, they can be tricky still.

You will still need to understand user interaction, how to design a user interface and also the basic tools behind sites like Wix and other drag and drop editors.

I like to put it like this:

If you are flat out doing what you are doing already, you should probably stick to what you’re doing best if it makes you money. Leave the website to a web developer.
Like we are, or a web developer near you.
Just find a developer who can do the site for you.

If you’re starting out on a new business and you’d rather get something up there for now, then by all means try Wix or Squarespace. Wix based on my opinion is a little nicer, But you do need a little understanding of how to use those sites properly. Expect a bit of trial and error.
All I can say, if you’re thinking of doing it yourself, in the future, get a professional to do one for you. Keep everything simple, keep it simple, use bullet points, clean headings, big buttons, put your phone number at the top.

Keep it simple, avoid writing tonnes of text and have terrible DIY iPhone photos on your website. Just keep it all very simple. Make it easy to look at. Avoid funky colours or anything that’s too over the top.

The key to take away is to keep it simple.

The next blog we will go into more detail about the process behind building a site, and also things to consider.

That’s it for today guys, join me next time for the RAZOR Web Design Wire Podcast, I’m your host Matt Reid.
